Nearly 3 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses were reported by private industry employers, resulting in an incidence rate of 3.4 cases per 100 equivalent full-time workers, according to the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2012). Majority of the causes is because of a potentially unsafe working environment or the noticed and unnoticed hazards within the workplace.
The benefits of maintaining a safe work environment are many, but first and foremost, safety is about what you can do to protect your workers. Workplace safety is important as it creates an environment in which the employer, employees and visitors feel safe to carry out their tasks without any hesitation. Workplace safety is necessary for maintaining a healthy and lengthy life for your business.
Millions of people across the world work in factories, warehouses, and manufacturing plants. But only a few of them are provided with occupational health and safety training lessons, to take care of their workplace safety. Adequate safety measures will improve the working environment, and will help the employees feel secure and confident. When the employers take proper initiatives to ensure the health and safety of the staff, it will involuntarily boost their morale and thereby increase their productivity. It also reduces unexpected fatal and no-fatal accidents, as well as the compensations and other expenses related to such accidents at workplace. Hence businesses should make sure their employees attend safety training programs appropriate for the work. This will help them improve the overall working conditions, and thus increase the productivity.
Most businesses end up implementing prevention programs AFTER something has happened that has caused a problem or issue - when, inevitably, the problem is a lot more serious and expensive to fix. Or, in a worst case scenario, the cost of litigation actually closes the door of the business...something that happens all too often!
So why don't more businesses have programs in place?
There are many reasons, but the two biggest deterrents include (1) Ignorance - just not knowing what to do, and (2) Avoidance - being overwhelmed by the costs and all the possibilities of what to do. At PCS-Consultants, we offer solutions and products that proactively minimize HR and Safety problems.
